Collaborators
Research in the Baruch Microbial Biogeochemistry Lab is collaborative. Our students work alongside colleagues at Baruch, across CUNY, at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and with the scientists of Hudson River Park’s River Project.
Carbon Allocation & Past CO2 Proxy
How do photosynthetic microbes allocate their carbon, and what do the carbon isotope ratios of their lipids and carbohydrates tell us about past environments?
- Dr. Sarah Hurley Lamont Assistant Research Professor, Division of Biology and Paleo Environment, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
- Dr. Elliott Mueller NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow, University of Colorado Boulder; incoming Assistant Professor, Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, UCLA (July 2027)
Hudson River Microbes & Oyster Restoration
How do the microbial communities growing on oyster shells and reef structures shape the success of oyster restoration in the Hudson River?
- Dr. Chester Zarnoch Professor, Department of Natural Sciences, Baruch College (CUNY)
- Ilana Cohen PhD Student, Earth & Environmental Sciences and Biology programs, CUNY Graduate Center
- Dr. Theodore Muth Professor, Department of Biology, Brooklyn College (CUNY)
- Hudson River Park’s River Project Science and environmental education program of the Hudson River Park Trust
Tree Rings & New York City Timber History
Where did the timber that built New York City come from? Baruch students train in tree-ring research at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory’s Tree Ring Lab and use it to trace the origin of wood salvaged from an early-1900s building in Harlem.
- Dr. Mukund Palat Rao Lamont Assistant Research Professor, Tree Ring Lab, Division of Biology and Paleo Environment, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
- Dr. Caroline Leland Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Environmental Science, William Paterson University; Tree Ring Lab, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
Isotope & Chemical Analyses
Our lab works with the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center on stable isotope and chemical analyses.
- Dr. Brian Giebel Deputy Executive Director, CUNY Advanced Science Research Center; Director, Advanced Laboratory for Chemical and Isotopic Signatures (ALCIS)
